At Liberty Home Solutions, we replace windows. It may sound simple, but we think we also provide our customers with the ability to remodel their home, creating a more aesthetically pleasing look, and save them money on energy costs month after month. Our favorite aspect of home remodel is the opportunity we receive to meet fun, passionate, hardworking people within our community.
We met Andrew and his wife, who were looking at an extensive home remodel. They were first-time homeowners who received quite a shock when they looked at their first energy bill. Their home was comprised of (36) wood double-hung windows that were original to the home which was built in 1968 as well as (4) sliding glass doors. Given the amount of windows and sliding glass doors they were looking at a major windows replacement cost that they hadnโt planned for in their remodel budget. โYou know when you are running numbers in your head, then putting it to paper, it always starts off great. We bought this home and immediately started knocking walls outs, opening the floor plan, installing hardwood floors, new kitchen appliances, counter-tops, back splash, all the fun stuff. My father helped me learn how to do most of this work myself. So we work for about a month on the home and its looking great, we didnโt have any surprises in our remodel, so we were on budget. Then I received that fun little bill from City Utilities and suddenly realized that I had a problem.
The home was vacant when we purchased it. So I had checked on the previous monthly utilities for the summer months and it was around $175. My bill was $700. I am self-admittedly bad with budgeting, my wife is responsible of all things money, so needless to say she was not happy. We suddenly realized that we needed to replace our windows and sliding glass doors, and the fact that our home had a lot of both.
My first thought was to try and replace the windows myself, just go to Loweโs, Home Depot or another big-box store, buy some $100 windows, install them myself, problem solved. Now I had no experience in installing windows, so I of course went to DIY.com and started watching instructional videos. From which gave me the distinct impression that this was not something that I could do myself.
My next action was to have Loweโs big out the window job. They seemed to have reasonable prices on their windows and had an installation special at the time. All I had to do was measure the windows and bring the measurements in. I learned that measuring windows isnโt the same thing as correctly sizing replacement windows to fit the existing space. Loweโs also said they sub-contract their window installations, and that they didnโt know who would install my windows and doors. I left without a true estimate showcasing material costs and installation. It was not a great experience.”
